The first community demonstration garden, a project of the FPC, was launched in the Spring of 2013. It is located on land owned by the Kannapolis Library next to the Kannapolis City Park for high visibility and educational opportunities. FPC’s Health and Wellness, Hunger, and Food Access Committee spearheaded the project lead by: Dr. Penny Perkins-Veazie of NC Research Campus; Megan Poole of Cabarrus Health Alliance; Ed Hosack of Cooperative Christian Ministry; Jessica Castrodale of Carolinas Medical Center; and Colleen McDaniel of The Inspired Garden, Inc.
The beds are all raised and create a circle around the center-focus bed. Currently four out of the nine beds have sponsors responsible for the planting and care of a bed:
- Cabarrus County Farm and Food Council
- Cabarrus Health Alliance
- Cotton Mill Mushroom Farms
- The Kneeling Gardeners
- The North Carolina Research Campus.
There are still garden beds available for sponsors. Interested companies should contact Aaron Newton for more information.
The library garden was completed on Kannapolis Kares Day 2014.
